RUTH TICK, MSW - The Power of Choice
The Power Of Choice - What does that mean?
Practical steps to improving the quality of your life
The Power of Choice
From my years of working with various populations, I have come to believe in the power of choice. Individuals need to understand that they have a whole range of choices of emotional reactions and behaviors, and are not limited to the choice which may feel the most natural to them. To achieve a greater sense of satisfaction, a person must be able to properly evaluate their choices and to make them in a mindful and conscious manner.
Past Behaviors Influence Our Lives
Too often, we tend to respond to situations on “automatic pilot” based on our accumulated past cognitive and emotional experiences, As a result, we may find ourselves in patterns of behavior of which we are unaware and which seem to happen without our ability to control them. This is often expressed in the maladaptive way we deal with anxiety, fear, anger, sadness and depression, by adopting coping mechanisms such as avoidance or unhealthy use of food, drugs and alcohol. This can also influence the way we relate to our families, our friends, our children and all those who surround us.
Learn How to Make New Choices
What is needed is a safe and non-judgmental space that enables one to observe uncontrolled behaviors, thoughts and emotions, thus gaining more knowledge and insight of the wide range of options and choices. From this place of knowledge, consciousness and mindfulness, one can begin making new and freer choices.
